STPGA Juniors Hold Podium at Texas Cup Invitational

Fort Worth—Maxwell Miller of College Station shot 1-under-par 70 in the final round of the Texas Cup Invitational presented by Veritex Community Bank to win by three strokes at Mira Vista Country Club.
After shooting 1-over on the front nine, Miller made three birdies on the back nine to gain the lead and win the Legends Junior Tour major event.
“I hit the ball really well today,” said Miller, “I was trying to play conservative and hit some really good drives out there.”
Miller took advantage of the course’s par 5s. Making birdie on the 540-yard 11th hole and the 542-yard 17th hole.
“The par 5s were downwind on the back nine and I felt that I could take advantage of those today,” said Miller.
Following a bogey on No. 3, Miller made seven consecutive pars, including the 431-yard fifth hole, which played as the toughest in the second round. The 2013 Texas State Junior Champion played the par 4s 1-under for both rounds.
Zach Tracy, who won the 2014 Texas State Junior Championship, tied with Rishi Kejriwal and defending champion Braden Bailey for second place at 2-over 144. Houston’s Tracy fired even-par 71 on Sunday, while Austin’s Kejriwal and Groves’ Bailey shot 1-over 72.
Cash Carter of Dallas and Noah Goodwin of Corinth tied for fifth with an overall score of 3-over-par 145, while Lucas Stewart, Dalton Hankamer, Crosby Guercio and Reese Ramsey tied for seventh at 4-over-par 146.
Miller captured his second major championship on the LJT schedule this season, winning the George Hannon Invitational at The Hills Country Club Signature Course in Austin. Miller is a two-time winner of the George Hannon and also won the 2013 Texas State Junior Championship. The Texas A&M commit has now won three of the four LJT major championships and is missing only the Byron Nelson Junior Championship to complete his career sweep.
Up next for the LJT is the season-ending Jackie Burke Cup at Champions Golf Club in Houston. Miller secured a spot on the South team and is excited to play.
“I really wanted to represent the south in the Jackie Burke Cup,” said Miller, “Playing in that event was my motivation today.”
