HORSESHOE BAY—Jenson Rogenes fired a 4-under-par 68 at Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Slick Rock Golf Course on Tuesday to win the Boys 14 & Under Division at the 89th Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch. Valerie Routzong claimed victory in the Girls 14 & Under Division with an overall score of 150.
Frisco’s Rogenes played both rounds in the 60s, making 11 birdies to only two bogeys. This win marks Rogenes’ first win on the Legends Junior Tour and his third top-five finish this year. The lefty finished fifth at the inaugural James A. Ragan Memorial in February and finished fourth at the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic in March. Rogenes improved on his tie for ninth in last year’s Texas State Junior Championship.
Dallas’ Turner Hosch and Kingwood’s Damin Strydom finished tied for second at 6-under 138 in the Boys 14 & Under Division. Hosch, who won the James A. Ragan Memorial, made 10 birdies in two rounds, while Strydom finished with 10 birdies and an eagle in two days. Strydom has three top-10 finishes on the season, while Hosch now has two runner-up finishes and five top-fives.
Sugar Land’s Andy Yang finished in fourth at 3-under 141, while Mansfield’s Brendan Powers claimed fifth place at 2-under 142. William Moll, Scott Roden, Nick Palmo, Rondarius Walters and Ben Dunne all tied for sixth at even-par 144, while Dawson Ovard and Matthew Denton tied for 11th at 1-over 145.
Richmond’s Routzong played consistently in the Girls 14 & Under Division, shooting two rounds of 75 to win by four strokes over Cedar Park’s Calynne Rosholt. Routzong made three birdies in her first nine holes and held on to win. Routzong is coming off a runner-up finish at the Flodder Financial Shootout, losing in a playoff.
Rosholt received runner-up honors after shooting 10-over 154 in 36 holes. Rosholt made three birdies this week. Leah Alberto and Yuliang Bao tied for third in the Girls 14 & Under Division at 15-over 159. Haili Moore and Halle Whitney tied for fifth with an overall score of 160.
The top five finishers in the Boys 14 & Under Division have earned exemptions into the LJT’s George Hannon Junior Invitational, while the top three finishers of the Girls 14 & Under Division earned exemptions into the Texas Girls’ Invitational.
Horseshoe Bay Resort has hosted the Texas State Junior Championship for the last six years. The next tournament for the LJT is the Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship, which is being played in Prosper at Gentle Creek Country Club on August 10-11.
