New Age Division Placement Policy

November 25th, 2013

Author: Thomas Hutton

Over the course of the last three years, the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf Program has grown tremendously. We now have over 3,000 members, three exciting Championships, and programs all year long. Due to this growth and evolution, the STPGA feels like a change to our age division placement is necessary.

Starting with the 2014 Spring Series, the STPGA will have a new age division placement policy. The policy will be specific to each Series (Spring, Summer, Fall). The age division that he or she plays in during a series will be determined by his or her age at the time of that Series Championship.

  • 2014 Spring Series Events - players will be placed in a division based off their age as of April 13, 2014
  • 2014 Summer Series Events - players will be placed in a division based off their age as of August 14, 2014
  • 2014 Fall Series Events - players will be placed in a division based off their age as of December 7, 2014.

Below you will see what our policy was in 2013.

  • 2013 Spring Series: Open to all juniors ages 6-12 as of September 1, 2012.
  • 2013 Summer Series: Open to all juniors ages 6-12 as of September 1, 2013.
  • 2013 Fall Series: Open to all juniors ages 6-12 as of September 1, 2013

A few reasons for this change:

1. The STPGA wants to make sure that the winners of each division at the Championships are in the range of that division. In previous years we have had players that were outside of the age division win a division because of the policy we had in place. For example, with our old policy an 10 year old could have won the 6-9 division at the Spring Series Championship.

2. Given that we award points during the summer, the STPGA does not want to hinder a junior golfer from getting to the Championship that has a birthday over the summer. For example, a player turns 13 on July 15. Without our policy in place he would compete in the 10-12 division until July 14 and then the 13-15 division for the rest of the summer. This player may not earn enough points to get to the Championship because they did not play all summer in one division. With our policy, this player would play all summer in one division and have an equal chance of getting to the Championship.

3. Since our program is now entering its third year with three distinctive seasons, we wanted our age division placement to reflect that as well. We also believe that similar to other sports, juniors play an entire season or league as one specific age. With our new policy and our three seasons, our program now reflects that philosophy.

The STPGA looks forward to using this new age division placement policy in 2014 to enhance our program. Please feel free to email Thomas Hutton, Director of Junior Golf at thutton@pgahq.com with any questions you might have.
