SPRING, TX (October 29, 2026) -
The Southern Texas PGA is proud to announce Mason An of Houston and Syler Schones of San Antonio as our 2026 STPGA Junior Golfers of the Year! The Junior Golfer of the Year Award recognizes male and female junior golfers who demonstrate exceptional playing ability, strong academic performance, outstanding character, and a deep respect for golf’s traditions. Mason and Syler represent the next generation of golfers who are making an impact both within the sport and in their communities.
Mason An, a Houston native and student at K-12 Private Academy, has spent nine years competing in STPGA Junior Golf, progressing through the program’s levels from Little Linksters to the Junior Tour and ultimately the Srixon Prestige Tour. Throughout his career, Mason has competed in more than 130 STPGA events, participated in all three season-ending Championships, and earned a victory on the Srixon Prestige Tour. His development through the STPGA helped prepare him for success on the national stage, where he has earned 2025 Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention recognition and won the 2025 Mack Champ Invitational.
Now competing primarily on the Legends Junior Tour and in national junior events, Mason represents the pathway STPGA Junior Golf creates for young athletes to reach the highest levels of competition while developing character and sportsmanship along the way. Maintaining a 4.3 GPA, An has committed to play collegiate golf at the University of Texas, marking the next step in his golf journey. For Mason, golf is about more than tournament results. He credits the game with teaching him discipline, perseverance, humility, and personal responsibility. His commitment to serving as a positive example for younger golfers reflects his belief that success is measured not only by performance, but also by character and the impact one makes on others.
Syler Schones, a San Antonio native and senior at Alamo Heights High School, has progressed through the STPGA Junior Golf program from Junior Links to the Junior Tour and now regularly competes on the Srixon Prestige Tour. Her journey reflects the pathway STPGA Junior Golf provides for young athletes to develop their skills and advance to higher levels of competition. Syler helped lead Alamo Heights to the 2025 UIL Class 5A Girls Golf State Championship and a third-place finish in 2026, while earning All-Region and All-District honors in both years. She also finished runner-up at the 2026 STPGA ATX Showcase and earned multiple top finishes in regional junior golf events. Maintaining a 4.4 GPA, Syler has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in both the classroom and on the course.
Outside of golf, Syler is actively involved in her school and community. She has served as Historian for the Terrell Hills Youth Council and participated in Student Council, Anthropology Club, and UIL Journalism competitions. Syler credits golf with teaching her patience, discipline, independence, and resilience. She emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for her actions, learning from mistakes, and treating competitors with respect regardless of the outcome.
The STPGA Junior Golfer of the Year Award celebrates athletes who excel in competition while embodying the values that make golf a lifelong game. Through their achievements, leadership, and dedication to their communities, Mason and Syler exemplify the impact junior golf can have both on and off the course.
The STPGA Awards selection process includes nominations, applications, and an Awards Committee made up of STPGA Board Members and previous award winners. The Southern Texas PGA thanks its Awards Committee for the time and consideration dedicated to recognizing this year's recipients.
Mason and Syler will be formally recognized during the Southern Texas PGA's 59th Annual Awards Banquet on Monday, February 15, 2027, in College Station, Texas.
Congratulations to Mason An and Syler Schones, the 2026 STPGA Junior Golfers of the Year!
