Columbus, Texas – Big Easy Ranch played host to the 7th Texas Junior Cup Matches presented by TCG Advisors on Saturday, September 29 – Sunday, September 30. Following three sessions of match play, with each session being played in a different format, Team STPGA prevailed over Team NTPGA with a final score of 16-8.
The Ryder Cup-style format featured 12 junior golfers from each Tour competing in 9-hole Four-Ball Matches on Saturday morning, 9-hole Scramble Matches on Saturday afternoon, and 9-hole Singles Matches on Sunday. Big Easy Ranch hosted the unique event for the second consecutive year, while TCG Advisors was featured as a presenting sponsor for the first time, and will return as presenting sponsors in 2019.
Day One kicked off with Mixed Four-Ball Matches in which two players from each team were paired together and played against a pair of golfers from the opposing team where each player hit his or her own ball, and the best score from each team would count for that hole. Five of the six matches needed all nine holes at Big Easy Ranch to determine a winner, with Southern Texas establishing an early edge by taking three of those pivotal Matches. Following the Mixed Four-Ball Matches, Team STPGA took the early lead by a score of 4-2.
After a lunch break, players returned to the golf course in the afternoon for Scramble Matches. Two players teamed together to take on two players from the opposition, where low scores were crucial in order to get a win. Both Team STPGA and Team NTPGA won two matches apiece, while another two matches finished all square, thus producing two halved matches. Following the Mixed Scramble Matches, the overall score remained in Team STPGA’s favor by a score of 7-5.
Twelve Singles Matches took place on Sunday, with one golfer from each team going head-to-head against a player from the opposing team. Jules Mahan, Abhay Duggal, Dresden Bounds, and Will Clarke won the first four matches of the morning, giving Team STPGA a massive advantage early in the day. Marissa Loya, Julia Vollmer, Bowen Ballis, and Darrelyn Webster won their matches to decisively put Team STPGA in the lead, but it was Shiv Parmar in Match Eight who earned the clinching point for Team STPGA, by virtue of his 1 UP victory. After the high-spirited matches had concluded, Team STPGA prevailed over Team NTPGA by a final score of 16-8.
